FOREWORD

"When we mean to hiild,
We first survey the plot, then draw the model;
And when xve see the figure of the house.
Then miist we rate the cost of the erection.
Which if we finil outweighs ability.
What do we then hut draw anew the model.' ^

— Shakespeahe in Henry IV

IN an architect imagination, the creative power, labors
for a utihtarian project; in embryo a castle in the
air, and again and again a castle in the air until such
time the potency of the dollar mark seductively
allies itself with the imagination and then only does
this power crystallize into a material rendering, in channels
of art and artisanship. A material rendering, yes, but with
what success for

" Ti? not an eye or nose, we beauty call.
But the full force arid joint result of all.''

What a mysterious mandate is herein contained. Util-
ity and ser\'ice fundamental to human need, but preemi-
nently Form and Color in perfect rhythm creates that
subtle melody of sound that few can hear, synchronous
and audible only to the poetic sense of man.

The Gothic arch, it's horizontal right as Sound, it's
horizontal left sis Color, the two, a dualistic symbol of a
seven fold rhythmic manifestation. Coalesced in final ca-
dence in the apex, we see that of Form, possessing the
quality of each and of neither ; a triune whole subserving
the purpose of structure: Art in Utility.
